My first e-commerce store had to be hand coded by a specialist company in the US as there were no off-the-shelf solutions available. eBay was in its infancy, Amazon had just started to sell a few books online and our Bank really had no idea about taking online card payments. We learnt it all the hard way!
It goes without saying that things are very much different now, people expect to be able to buy online and businesses in some market sectors rely on e-commerce for over 90% of their business. But it is still easy to get it wrong. It is not enough to just list everything you sell on a website and hope for the best. Your website is your shopfront, your products should be neatly displayed and described with clear pricing, your ordering process shouldn’t get in the way or make it difficult for people to complete a transaction. Then you have to back that up with fantastic after-sales service. The time when everything to do with mail-order used to come with the tagline “please allow 28 days for delivery” just doesn’t cut it any longer.
